PROJECTS N4 Kaldor Public Art Projects / Performing Banality Design Studio

David Burns, Director of Photography and Situated Media at UTS, and Sam Spurr, Founding Director of Interior & Spatial Design at UTS, are leading a multi-disciplinary design studio that challenges photography and spatial design students to examine themes related to the banal.

Martin Heidegger famously equated boredom with the potential for creative expression: "Profound boredom, drifting here and there in the abysses of our existence like a muffling fog, removes all things and men and oneself along with it into a remarkable indifference. This boredom reveals being as a whole".

The 12 teams of UTS students will be researching six concepts (the mirror, the perfect, the monotonous, the forgery, the forensic, and the Doppelgänger) that will lead to exciting new projects. On April 5, the students will mount their research in the CTA building and will invite the public to join the conversation. On April 19, the students will present their final projects to the public as a pop-up exhibition in the CTA building.
